Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) kills over 350,000 people every single year in the U.S. alone. It is the leading cause of death for adults over the age of 40, and also leads to the loss of nearly 23,000 youth annually. Despite being a massive public health issue, survival rates have unfortunately remained dismal at around 10% for decades.

Fortunately, there’s a treatment for Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) – the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). If used quickly, an AED can be highly effective. However, AEDs are often inaccessible, poorly designed, and hard to use.

The Avive Connect AED is designed to be more portable, intuitive to use, connected, and affordable than existing AEDs. Improving the usability was the most critical challenge, and involved creating a user flow that helps people act quickly when they witness a SCA, from activating the device to applying the electrode pads and administering a shock. Many prototypes and several rounds of user testing resulted in a clear and supportive user experience. The rounded rubberized device is rugged and portable, and can be mounted to a wall for easy accessibility.
